HGTV Showdown: Bonus Room Blitz

Sabrina Soto and Drew Lachey team up to take on Matthew Finlason and Kristi Yamaguchi to see who can transform a dated bonus room into a contemporary, family-friendly space in just four hours.

  • Before: This basement bonus room is stuck in the '70s. The homeowners, Brian and Heidi Eggert, would like to see it brought into the 21st century with a bold color scheme and a contemporary yet rustic look. They'd like a space where they can entertain friends or enjoy family game night with their two young children.
  • Runner-Up After: Matthew fulfilled the homeowners' wish for family-friendly design with clever, wall-hugging bench seating which does double duty as hidden storage for the kids' toys. He chose to enclose an electric fireplace between the two support columns which adds the natural element of fire to the space but also makes the room feel like two separate spaces.
  • Runner-Up After: Matthew chose to disguise the funky barnwood paneling with paint and drapery panels rather than demo it. The finished effect is nice, creating a cozy and colorful corner for relaxing.
  • Runner-Up After: A retro-mod lamp adds a hip touch to the game area of the room while chalkboards hung at kid height encourage creativity.
  • Winning Design After: Sabrina and Drew wowed the homeowners with their bold fiery-orange color choice, contemporary styling, rustic flooring and open floor plan. They created a birch accent wall to disguise the two support columns, honoring the family's desire for natural elements.
  • Winning Design After: Sabrina's fiery-orange color choice dramatically warms up the space. Pops of orange in the leather club chair, laminate flooring, a rustic coffee table and vibrant accessories create a cozy and welcoming whole.
  • Winning Design After: Sabrina created the "House Always Wins" artwork to add a playful touch to this corner of the room set aside for poker with friends or family game night. © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
