An Eclectic, Colorful Boy's Room

Designer Christine Thompson used her son's birth city of London as inspiration to create a hip hideout where her 8-year-old son can study, play and spend time with friends.

  • Colorful Kids Room

    Design Around Their Passions

Eight-year-old Jake is an avid reader, loves to play with Legos and is a certified Anglophile. His mom designed his room around his passions with dedicated areas for reading, open floor space for play and plenty of English design touches.

  • Mom and Son

    Style to Grow Into

The Thompsons moved back to the U.S. when Jake was 2 years old, so this room was originally his nursery. When transitioning it to a big kid's room, Christine focused on creating a space he would enjoy now and for many years to come.

  • Funky Painted Mural

    Fashionable Feature Wall

Inspired by English clothing designer Paul Smith's vibrant striped shirts, Christine and her husband hand-painted wavy bands of color onto the bedroom's feature wall. The remaining walls were intentionally left white so as not to overpower the room with color.

  • English Accessories

    London Calling

Small nods to England are everywhere you look in Jake's room. Here, a diminutive red telephone box makes a handy bookend for Jake's Harry Potter collection.

  • Union Jack Pillow

    Palette Inspiration

Christine purchased this updated Union Jack pillow when the family lived in London. Its many colors influenced the palette of the curvy striped focal wall.

  • Childrens Book Art

    Easy Artwork

Artwork in the room is both budget friendly and right on theme. Christine enlarged images from one of Jake's favorite children's books, This Is London, then popped them in frames.

  • Modern Lighting

    Sculptural Lighting

This Possini Euro Design flower pendant is an instant classic. Its modern aesthetic keeps the room from feeling too traditional.

  • kids room rocker with union jack pillow

    Retro Rocker

This Eames-inspired midcentury-modern rocking chair was once a fixture in Jake's nursery and has now transitioned to his bedroom. The chair's timeless styling and functionality ensures it will be with him for many more years to come.

  • vintage books

    Inherited Classics

Jake shares his passion for reading with his family. These hardbound volumes once belonged to his great-grandfather.

  • Round Nightstand

    Contrast Styles

Christine chose this sleek nightstand with modern curves to contrast with the more traditional pieces in the room. This is one of Jake's favorite pieces, functioning as his treasure chest where he hides special items.

  • Tiger Art

    Military Regalia

A playful print of a tiger dressed as an English officer watches over Jake's collection of toy soldiers.
