The DilemmaBaby Elia's nursery needs color and interest to stimulate her growing mind. Books and toys clutter the space, while the hardwood floor is tough on little knees. The space also needs a spot to unwind with lullabies at the end of the day.
The SolutionThe team uses one of Elia's blankets for a color scheme. Warm tones of brown, yellow and green, along with a touch of periwinkle will give the space a soft and soothing color palette. New bookcases will provide lots of storage space for books and toys, and a rocking chair will be great for quiet moments. A soft chenille rug gives Elia a comfortable place to play, and whimsical window treatments frame the storybook view from the nursery window. Here's how the team gets it done.
Lavender Window TreatmentFirst, they paint the space by taping off "panels" on the walls and applying shades of yellow, lavender, periwinkle and green.
Interior designer Kristan Cunningham gets to work on the design for the window treatment. She cuts a valance shape from medium-density fiber board (MDF) and then paints it to give it the look of draperies, adding elegant fringe to the edge for extra detail. A fabric balloon shade in lavender and green is hung behind the valance for depth and interest.
LampDesign coordinator Dave Sheinkopf strings genuine amethyst beads onto monofilament and then hot glues the strands to the edge of a simple white lampshade. The lamp is placed on a simple round accent table that is covered in coordinating fabric. The lamp is screwed to the table from underneath, and the table is secured to the floor with an L-bracket to make it impervious to little tugs that could otherwise cause it to topple over.
Wall SconceDave then gets to work customizing lighting sconces for the walls. He cuts the base from MDF and gives it a coat of white paint. Next, he mounts the sconce to the MDF and attaches the whole thing to the wall.
Fabric-Covered Closet DoorsKristan makes fabric-covered panels for the hinged closet doors. Each panel is covered in a different fabric using a mix of florals and mini-prints in the coordinating patterns of color.
Rocking ChairA rocking chair is refurbished with a fresh coat of white paint, and soft new pillows create the perfect spot for bedtime stories.
BookcasesDesign coordinator Spencer Anderson customizes bookcases from an unfinished-furniture store. He gives the exterior of the pieces a coat of white and the inside back panel a coat of periwinkle-colored paint. He adds molding in periwinkle to the top edge for a high-end look.
Chenille RugA vibrant chenille rug gives baby Elia the perfect spot to crawl and play in cozy comfort.
