When you’re raising three kids on your own, it’s easy to push “decorate bedroom” to the bottom of your to-do list. Divorced two years after purchasing her ranch home in Milmay, NJ, Carol DeFoor struggled to put her personal stamp on the space. “After my ex-husband moved out, I attempted to make it more feminine by painting the walls a pinkish shade,” says Carol. “But I ran out of ideas and money, and it never went any further.”
Putting Mom First
Recognizing their mom’s need for a retreat, Carol’s three kids helped her measure the room and photograph it so they could enter HGTV Magazine’s Mother’s Day Makeover contest. “We had fun doing it, but, honestly, none of us thought I’d win,” says Carol. However, her bare bedroom—accessorized with an exercise bike—immediately caught the attention of editors.
Help From a HGTV Star
Using HGTV HOME furniture (hgtvhomefurniture.com) and HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams paint (Silvermist on the walls and White Duck on the trim), Carol’s 16-foot-by-17-foot room got a top-to-bottom redo with help by designer Matt Muenster.
Thanks to Matt, Carol finally has a place to read in her bedroom. The club chair from HGTV HOME Design Studio at Bassett sits next to a brass floor lamp, also by HGTV HOME. Two paintings by Carol’s son Troy hang above.
Floor-skimming pleated panels block sunlight and can cover a small arched window behind the bed. Matt had each 56-inch-by-96-inch panel made from striped cotton fabric (One Way in fog, joann.com), a nice contrast to the floral bedding.
Bed and Bench
The old bed was swapped for an updated sleigh style piled high with pattern, including a duvet and Euro shams (Garden Odyssey fabric in fog, joann.com). A zigzag-fabric-covered bench replaced the wood trunk. Much comfier!
The Luna De Luna nylon rug from HGTV HOME by Shaw was layered over Carol’s Berber carpet. “If you don’t want to pull up wall-to-wall carpet, layering is a great solution,” says Matt. An area rug keeps a bed from floating in large room.
One of Matt’s pet peeves: matching nightstands. The two flanking Carol’s new bed have different heights, widths, and finishes. Red ceramic lamps from HGTV HOME make the contrasting table and chest feel connected.
Carol had a dresser stashed in her walk-in closet, but the new big-impact bed begged for more of a standout piece on the opposite wall. So Matt went with a nine-drawer dresser and mirror in the same collection and finish as the bed, Caravan in Midnight from HGTV HOME.
