A mismatched bedroom is transformed with a new color palette and modern design elements.
When the owners of this home added an upstairs master bedroom, they wanted to create a relaxing retreat from their full-time jobs and the demands of raising a toddler. However, due to some poor color choices, the room ended up making them feel more stressed out than relaxed. They chose a contemporary shade of blue that clashed with their outdated, orangey-brown furniture.
A new color palette of shaded blue, espresso brown, cream and white gives the room a uniform feel and creates the relaxed feeling the homeowners were seeking. Dark brown stripes on the wall and in the furniture pull the room together and give it a sophisticated, adult look. New blue window treatments are mixed with chocolate-brown sheers, while favorite vacation photos find a home along the stripes on the walls.
Two chocolate club chairs anchor the new seating area, while the blue pendant lights, along with accessories that echo the blue and brown palette, add to the ordered feel of the space. Custom-designed sunburst pieces add a striking and modern focal point to the room. They're created from plastic triangles and thin strips of wood, and for more visual interest, tiny circular mirrors are added around the design.
The owners lost the orangey-brown color by staining the existing furniture a dark espresso. Not only is staining much less expensive than buying new furniture, but it also gives the room a cohesive, organized feel.
