Before: Awkward LayoutMax and Abby Krasny are having trouble decorating their family room. It’s the space where they spend most of their time with their young children. To make sure they get it just right, the couple has called on designer Angelo Surmelis and the 24 Hour Design team to help them transform the space into a fabulous family room.
Not only is the room long and narrow, there is a sliding-glass door taking up one whole wall, a three-quarter-height wall to the side and the long wall has a door right in the middle of it.
After: Classy CountryThe walls are painted golden yellow to blend in with the already existing color palette in the adjacent rooms. A custom-made table is built to hold the homeowners’ new TV. An antique credenza in the next room is the inspiration for the table’s curved design. The table's marble top matches the new marble shelf placed on top of the three-quarter divider wall (bottom). A pair of rugs helps to visually break the room so it doesn’t appear long and narrow.

Before: Bulky FurnitureAlso, the homeowners have just purchased a new flat-panel TV that they would love to use in this room.
After: Contemporary CountryThe homeowners’ sofa is paired with a contemporary red leather chair and dark wood tables. Two more arm chairs are placed on the other side of the room for additional seating. A pair of end tables are pushed together to make a coffee table. This gives the room more flexibility and the big baskets on the bottom shelf provide extra storage. Storage is important, especially with small kids, so an open shelving unit is placed in the corner to hold toys and books.
