Before: Eclectic ClutterAmanda Jolley gave her friend Judy Baird the greatest gift of all — life. When she found out her friend was suffering from kidney failure, Amanda generously donated her kidney to help save Judy's life. Because Amanda so unselfishly gave of herself, designer Vern Yip is going to give back to her and her husband, Dale, by redesigning their pool pavilion, and as a surprise, he'll make over their master bedroom, too.
Amanda and Dale joke that the style of their home is "eclectic clutter." That style extends out to their beautiful pool pavilion. They use the area to entertain and to relax on weekends, so they would like it to be more inviting and also be able to use it more in the off-season.
After: Outdoor RoomThe pavilion is now an elegant outdoor room and an extension of the home. Cone-shaped planters frame the outside of the structure and inside, striped drapes soften the space with year-round color. Mildew-resistant furniture can be left outdoors no matter the weather. The solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are made to withstand moisture, extreme temperature and bright sunlight. Three small tables are pushed together to make one large dining table giving the homeowners some flexibility. Two new ceiling fans have wide blades that better circulate the air, making the space a lot cooler. In between the fans, teak lanterns hang down to illuminate the space.
Before: No Closet SpaceLiving in a 90-year-old-house has it charms and grace, but one thing most older homes don't have is a lot of closet space, and this bedroom is no exception. The homeowners not only need a place to hang their clothes, they want more display storage for their collection of travel mementos and souvenirs.
After: Organized and StylishThe homeowners are completely surprised to find that designer Vern Yip has revamped their master bedroom. Vern starts by tearing off the wallpaper and giving the walls a two-tone treatment. The lower portion of the walls are painted green and the upper portion is painted amber. Green, one-inch horizontal stripes are then painted in the upper portion. Horizontal stripes make a room look wider and a little like it is in motion. The bed is reoriented to provide more space for a new, freestanding closet. Display shelves with glass doors are hung behind the bed giving the homeowners a place to showcase their keepsakes. New bedside lamps, silk bedding and rich window treatments add the finishing touches.
