Row House Makeover Adds Charm and Grace

A vintage row house gets a new stone entry, stairs, paint and landscaping.

  • Matt Voorhees and Chris Dorobek live in a historical urban row house. While they love many things about the home, the exterior lacked the class and charm they desired.
  • Designer Dan Banks came up with a design that highlighted the home's Victorian details. The yellow paint was stripped off and replaced with a rich café latte color.
  • The front door was painted a burnt orange color to add contrast to the front. Also, shutters were added to the window above the door.
  • The crumbling brick and concrete were torn out and replaced with a stone walkway and stairs.
  • The old iron railings were just too ornate for a Victorian home. The new custom railings are much simpler with just the right amount of detailing.
  • The old windows were replaced with modern, energy-efficient designs that matched the character of the home. Plantation shutters were mounted inside all of the windows.
  • The overgrown foliage was removed and replaced with plants that give the front yard a woodsy feeling, even though it's in the middle of the city.
