Contemporary Hacienda Bedroom

See how a bland bedroom is infused with a warm, contemporary hacienda style.

Before: Bland Bedroom

Arlene and Milt Capsimalis live in a 1998 Mediterranean-style home with hand-plastered walls and hardwood floors. They have established a warm "hacienda" theme in the rest of their house, but they haven't been able to agree on one for their bedroom. Arlene would like to infuse the room with that same hacienda style, and Milt agrees, but acknowledges that he can easily revert back to his college days and settle for simple, bland decor. The challenge for host and designer Karen McAloon is to find a way to develop their style together and branch out to create a master bedroom suite that will lift them from their bland rut and give both them and their space a new beginning.

The couple's bland bedroom holds a very simple bed frame, curtains that hide beautiful arched windows, a couch they rarely sit on, clusters of knickknacks and plain white walls. While the couple feels that their style may be obvious, color and definitive elements are what trips-up these two. Karentakes a look around the room, noting things like the Spanish-style cabinet and the contemporary photo display of black-and-white family shots (not shown). She declares their style to be contemporary hacienda — "an updated take on the Mexican style of the Mission houses ... deep jewel tones, rough-hewn woods and organic, earthy elements," she explains.
