Before: Too Small for Two GirlsTyra and her daughters, Binkki and Kai lost everything in hurricane Katrina. While Tyra's husband, Gladdis, stayed in New Orleans to rebuild their home, Tyra moved to Hollywood so her daughters could pursue their dreams of becoming comedians. Now, designer Vern Yip and the Deserving Design team are going to redesign their home away from home to help make it feel a little more homier.
Teenage sisters Kai and Binkki share a bedroom that is very tight on space. Everyone finds a problem with this room. The girls think it is bland and boring; they would love to see more color in here. Their mom thinks the furniture is too young-looking for the girls, and Yip has a strong dislike for the dreary carpeting.
After: Private and RoomyYip had the nasty carpet torn out and replaced it with green carpet tiles, which were laid on a quarter-turn to create an interesting pattern. The walls are painted soft-buttery yellow, a color that the girls requested. To maximize the space, new daybeds are placed against the wall, toe to toe. Curtains are hung around and in between the beds to help divide the space and give the girls some privacy. New dressers and shelves provide more storage, and the new desk is a perfect spot to do homework.
Before: Clunky Hand-Me-DownsTyra doesn’t know it, but designer Vern Yip is also going to makeover her bedroom. Filled with hand-me-down, bulky furniture that was donated to her after hurricane Katrina, Tyra tells Yip that if he were to redo her room, she'd like to see bright colors and a lot of romance.
After: A Romantic SurpriseTyra is overwhelmed to find that her bedroom has been transformed into a relaxing retreat. Yip incorporates a romantic vibe using warm colors, flowing fabrics and candlelight. As was done in the girls' room, the old carpet is replaced with new carpet tiles. The walls are painted a deep orange, and silk drapes frame the window. The bulky, hand-me-down furniture is gone and in its place is a gorgeous new four-poster bed, TV table, nightstands and dressers. To make the bed soft and romantic, a silk canopy is hung from the ceiling. Finally, Yip adds the ultimate romantic accessory — he flies Tyra's husband, Gladdis, in from New Orleans for the most shocking surprise of all.
