South of the Border Family Room

Host David Bromstad pushes homeowners with all beige walls and traditional tastes closer to the design edge. Using saturated colors, he introduces a south-of-the-border style into their family room.

  • This room has great structure and lines. Lots of natural light gives it a spacious feel and sunny atmosphere.
  • Tapping into the architectural style of Mexico, Bromstad creates a feature out of the fireplace wall by refacing the built-ins.
  • The beige wall color drowns out the colors and textures of the wood and tile in the room.
  • Design/color assistant Daniel Hirsch transforms the appearance of the wood cabinets with a mustard-colored paint that has lots of glaze added to it.
  • Bromstad saw an ottoman like this at a store for $3,000 and got inspired.
  • Helfer was game for Bromstad's little twist on not sharing the design sketch before the design team started the project. © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
