Before: Blank SlateBefore: Blank Slate
For the past year and a half, homeowners Stephanie and Brandon White have been consumed with a total home remodel. Their living room is next up to become another fabulous room in their home. Using a neutral base of browns and blues on the walls and in the traditional furniture, host David Bromstad infuses the room's clean design with vibrant orange accents and modern accessories.
Their new furniture is stored in another room in the house, and a "fantasy board" collage they have compiled with clippings from magazines hangs above their unfinished fireplace.

The vibrant orange complements the calming blue tones, while the browns provide a neutral, grounding weight and sophistication. Bromstad chooses versatile accessories to tie the room together. The leather ottoman can go with everything from traditional to modern. If you want to be safe in your design, pick neutral furnishings that will go with any style and color.

The room has great features that are clear to see. Large windows and an alcove give an added sense of spaciousness to this modest-sized living room. It's a great place to start.
After: Finished Lines
While Bromstad doesn't usually like to place furniture in front of a window because it blocks the view, the dimensions and functional aspects of this room require it in this case. He prefers to position couches opposite the fireplace, but the Whites don't want their flat-screen TV to be located above the fireplace. The compromise works pretty well, thanks to that alcove.

To highlight the art as a centerpiece in the room, he designs a lightbox frame that surrounds the painting with light. He covers the fluorescent bulbs with frosted plastic panels to diffuse the light and give a clean, finished look to this element.
