All-Brick Colonial Update Slide Show

A traditional brick Colonial gets a sleek new look with a Japanese garden, wooden walkway, river rocks and stainless-steel planters.

  • Tami and Clint Larkan love modern design, but even though Clint's an architect they were stumped when it came to updating their traditional all-brick Colonial with a modern look.
  • Designer Christopher Ralston came up with a plan that incorporated a Japanese garden with natural materials and sleek stainless-steel.
  • Ralston used a wood walkway to bridge the driveway and front door. River rocks for the new Japanese garden were placed underneath the walkway to create the illusion of a floating bridge.
  • The windows were lost in the flat expanse of brick. Ralston repeated the walkway theme with matching wood shutters that highlight the windows.
  • Clint Larkin came up with an idea to use stainless-steel containers as planter boxes in the garden. Simple lines and colors complete the look of the landscape.
  • A grid patterned-driveway mimics the lines of the garden and a colored sealer protects the asphalt from damage. © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
