Kid-Friendly Contemporary Living Room

Everyone has a space that's overrun by something. Host Karen McAloon changes what these homeowners already have in a contemporary living room makeover that includes the kids.

  • The Schwartz's house has a continuous flow of beige from room to room. They would like something that sets the living room apart from the rest of the house.
  • A calming blue sets a compatible tone contrasting the beige in the other areas of the house.
  • The built-in shelving units are overrun with the kids' toys, Joel Schwarz's miniature bottle collection and whatever else they can hold. Although the room is tidy, it still feels cluttered.
  • McAloon creates a kids' corner to isolate the impact of sharing the room with children's activities and things.
  • For a fun twist on a standard table, McAloon routed out three geometric shapes into the surface of the tabletop.
  • Paint expert Danielle Hirsch uses joint compound, some leftover wall paint and gold leaf to create artwork that mimics Venetian plaster.
  • McAloon cleans up the look of this shelving unit by adding shutters for hidden storage. © 2010 Scripps Networks, L.L.C. All rights reserved
