Before: Cluttered with No StyleCheryl Harrington is open to color on her bare white walls, but nothing too bold. The Design on a Dime team sets out to transport her to a relaxing island in the sun for less than $1,000.
The dark brown wicker headboard will work with the Caribbean style, but the color may need to change. The curtains, however, are downright tacky — they're literally held up with thumb tacks! The lighting in the room is less than adequate. The cluttered art deco vanity and oversize chair are the wrong style and must go, but there is a small chair that can be reupholstered.
After: Tropical Craftsman RetreatThe Solution
Interior designer Lee Snijders and design coordinators Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge warm up the room with soft Caribbean colors and change out the lighting. The walls are painted sky blue, while the molding is trimmed in walnut brown. To give the molding a faux-wood grain texture, a squeegee, with zigzag notches cut out, is pulled over a coat of reddish-brown paint mixed with faux glaze.

Palm Leaf Light BoxesShe uses a utility knife to cut out a palm leaf skeleton from the lightweight balsam wood.
Tropical Vanity and ChairAn existing chair is reupholstered with the same sea-breeze blue fabric as the bedding for a coordinated look.
Basket ArtThe panel is framed with crown molding stained walnut brown.
