Woodland Bungalow: Before-and-After Slide Show

A slide show of before and after images from Curb Appeal 1908, transforming a brick cottage with earthy and organic craftsman highlights.

  • Before, the plain brick facade and overgrown yard did not encourage homeowners Jill and Andrew Fahlund to spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • The crumbling concrete walkway and narrow driveway were other problem areas.
  • Wooden trim and railings, earth-tone paint and landscape improvements really add punch to the charming bungalow.
  • The porch loses the old metal railing and the brick columns are covered with wood.
  • Other improvements for the porch include a ceiling fan, potted herbs, Craftsman chairs and fresh paint along with stain and sealer to protect the wood.
  • Landscape designer Blake Dunlevy added a flagstone walkway and stacked-stone retaining wall. The new driveway is made with stamped asphalt to give it the appearance of aged stone.
  • Native plants and a dry bed of river rocks are added around the house to catch water from the downspout.
  • The custom wooden railings and fresh paint on the porch add warmth to the entry.
  • The retaining wall is a dry stack using no mortar for a more natural look.
  • The old concrete walkway was capped with flagstone.
