Toilet and Shower BeforeHomeowners Sharon and John Distase hate their bathroom. Even their 7-year-old daughter, Sydney, is embarrassed to have her friends see it. They have tried to disguise the bold, brash wallpaper by downplaying it with a jungle motif, but, it doesn't quite work. Designer Krista Watterworth and carpenter Marc Bartolomeo are ready to replace the robust patterns with some cool contemporary colors, natural tiles and bright modern fixtures.
It has blue flowers, brown stems and lily pads with gold foil accents. The bold pattern makes the room feel tomb-like, as if the walls are closing in. The homeowners also have a problem with the fake-wood veneer vanity; they think it is very ugly, and the old double sinks are full of rust stains and calcium deposits.
Toilet and Shower AfterThe overall design fulfills the homeowners' two requests — a bathroom that works for both their 7-year-old daughter as well as for the occasional houseguest. The room is graceful and chic with feminine qualities, but not too over the top. Earth-toned, unpolished floor tiles give the room a calming effect, while the polished tile that covers the shower walls provides an elegant touch. To open up the room, the knee wall at the end of the shower is taken down, and a two-sided, curved shower curtain rod is fastened to the shower walls. The room is brightened up with recessed lighting in the shower and a contemporary pendant light over the toilet.
Vanity BeforeThe dark-brown floor tile is another problem. The busy pattern on the floor, next to the busy pattern on the walls, makes the whole feel of the room very chaotic. The homeowners can't wait to get rid of the old bathtub. It is so tiny, their young daughter barely fits in there. Lighting is also an issue. There are no lights in this corner of the room, so when the shower curtain is closed, it is very dark inside.
Vanity AfterThe vanity wall is painted raspberry, then the rest of walls are contrasted with a cool blue color. The double vanity is replaced with a sleek pedestal sink and a freestanding storage cabinet. A custom-made bench with storage cubbies provides even more space to stash stuff. White cotton fabric with a swatch of pink is used to make matching window and shower curtains.
