Relaxing SanctuaryBefore: Too Much Stimulation
Homeowner Laurie Arias has too much going on in her bedroom. She has her desk, computer, sewing machine, TV and her bed all squeezed into one small space. With all this activity going on, she is finding it hard to relax. She has decided to move all her non-bedroom items into a large bonus room on the other side of house. Besides her bed and dressers, the only other thing she wants in her room is a nice comfy chair where she can curl up and read to her grandchildren.
Walls and FurnitureA multi-layered patina process is used to give her old dressers a facelift. The Old-World look gives an air of sophistication to the room and complements the wall color perfectly.

Faux WindowsFirst, a square is taped off underneath the window and then painted blue. Next, molding is hung around the window and the blue square. Grids are nailed inside the square to help create the illusion of a large window. Cornice boxes are covered in fabric and then adorned with upholstery tacks. White sheer panels are hung underneath the cornices, then curtains made from the same fabric as the cornice boxes are swagged to one side. A rolled-up 98-cent remnant of bullion trim on the tie-back adds an inexpensive finishing touch.
