Dream HouseBefore: New Construction
Busy attorneys Caroline and Kevin are building their dream house from scratch. They love the way the exterior of the home is coming together, but unfortunately the interior doesn't match up. They want a space that is great for entertaining and brings in their love of the outdoors. They'd also like it to match the exterior of the home's modern style, and they want to use as much natural material as possible. Because the floor plan is open and big, the couple wants this large area to serve as a living/dining room and still leave enough room for a pool table.
By blending modern style with natural elements into a multifunctional living space, the homeowners dream home is now a reality. The use of natural materials warms the cool contemporary design of the home and comfortably brings the outdoors inside.
Fireplace WallTwo recessed shelves and a built-in bench are lined with slabs of natural onyx. The gorgeous stone serves as the inspiration for the room's color palette and works perfectly with the concept of bringing the outdoors in. Big space needs big art, so Kenneth pulled the colors from the room's fabrics and painted a stunning geometric canvas to hang along the expansive fireplace wall.
Seating AreaThe colors and clean lines of the furniture are drawn from nature, and the angles nicely play off the angles of the home's very modern architecture. The Moorish-style table between the two sofas also works well with the angles and adds extra visual interest.
Cork ChairsTheir shape reflects the home's modern structural design, and the fact that they're done in cork adds an unexpected punch. The rich hardwood floors help warm up all the cool glass in the room, and they blend nicely with the color palette.
Pool TableThe geometric wooden base was designed to give the piece a modern flair. Interior side pockets keep the lines of the table clean and simple. Khaki-colored felt matches the room's color palette and adds a touch of elegance.
Kenneth's Tip: When customizing a pool table, try a color felt that's different than the traditional green or red.
Dining TableUpholstered dining chairs add a traditional feel and provide a soft balance to the glass top and the other modern elements in the room.
ChandeliersMatching fixtures provide balance and a real shot of drama to the room. The crystals give the pieces a beautiful, traditional feel, while the rectangular shape makes them very modern.
