Before: Hold Your NoseFrat boys Kris Herrmann and Dave Vreeland have something to brag about. Out of the 21 guys in their fraternity, their room is the messiest. The 12 by 20-foot room is a decent size, but they can hardly move around in the space because it is piled so high with stuff. The desk is absolutely atrocious; there is no room to even open a book. Kris and Dave are two very social guys, so their room has become a gathering spot for the rest of the frat house. Unfortunately, when their frat brothers visit, they don't always clean up after themselves. Professional organizer Betty Kim went to this same university, so she's anxious to revisit her alma mater and tackle this challenge.
The first order of business is to get rid of the garbage and old fast food containers that are lying about. The coffee table has become a dining table. It is encrusted with pizza sauce and food from weeks gone by, and it's starting to smell really bad. There is plenty of closet space in the room, but the guys choose to use the chairs and the floors to store the all of their clothes.
After: Color Coded and Odor FreeThe room is split in half by paint. Kris' side of the room is painted blue, while Dave's side is painted green. Two new beds are placed in the front of the room and a divider is hung in between for privacy. Underneath the beds are drawers and shelves so the guys can store their sports equipment and clothes. The closets are cleaned out and reorganized. Shoe bags are hung from the closet poles to hold ties and belts in the little compartments. Sturdy, new hangers will help the guys keep their clothes neat and unwrinkled. The couch is moved closer to the door to keep the entertainment area separate from the sleep and study areas.
Before: No Place to WorkBoth frat brothers have a heavy course load that requires a lot of reading and study. Their problem isn't motivation; it's the desk that is covered with clutter. They have gotten to the point where they do most of their work on their beds because the desk doesn't have enough room to hold a laptop or open a book.
After: Crack the BooksGone is all the clutter and mess of papers. The guys each have their own designated space to keep their books organized. The workstation is separated from the entertainment area, so now the DVDs and video games won't get all mixed up with the schoolwork. Organization like this is sure to bring up that grade-point average.
