Romantic Bedroom

Host Joan Steffend and designer Barbara Sculati incorporate a fresh, romantic look into a drab, dorm-like bedroom.

  • With the help of host Joan Steffend, carpenter Jeff Meyer and less than $500, designer Barbara Sculati incorporates a fresh, romantic look into a drab, dorm-like bedroom.
  • The room gets brightened up with a fresh coat of creamy yellow paint. The room is fairly small, so one can of paint does the job.
  • Two old medicine cabinets are repurposed into nightstands. They are given a fresh coat of cream paint, then a towel bar is added for a handle.
  • The boring blinds are covered with a rich, green valance and delicate sheers. The valance is dressed up with blue-beaded ribbon necklaces.
  • A large headboard is made to add height and drama to the room. Crafted from three discarded screens, each piece is covered in quilting, fabric and trim and then connected with hinges. The headboard is then attached to the homeowners' bed frame.
  • The new bedding starts with an elegant silk bedskirt. Designer Sculati then cleverly crafted a duvet out of vintage napkins and pillow shams from an old tablecloth.
  • The new furniture arrangement allows for the addition of two large dressers. The secondhand set was brought back to life with new paint and hardware.
  • The old closet doors are replaced with sophisticated beaded curtains. Thrift-store fabric was sewn together and dressed up with beads.
