Before: Catch-All Storage RoomHomeowners Jenni and Brian Grant moved into their home two years ago. At that time Brian envisioned that their den would become his poker room, but two years later, the room is wall-to-wall storage.
Somewhere underneath all that clutter is Brian's unused poker table, chips and cards. The homeowners want this room to serve three purposes. Jenni would like to turn the den into a place where he can hang out and have his friends over for poker. Baby stuff has taken over the rest of the house, so they would also like an adult space with a couch and media center. Lastly, Jenni wants to claim one corner of the room to keep her crafting supplies and have a place to scrapbook.
Organizer Betty Kim hates clutter, which makes her the perfect person to turn this neglected space into the homeowners' favorite space.
After: Fun, Relaxing and CreativeThe poker table is set up and ready for action. The new couch is a comfy place for the losers to retreat to after they've lost all their chips. A large desk in the corner provides Jenni a great work surface for crafts. Wheeled storage carts conceal all her supplies and keep them organized. With three well-defined areas, the homeowners will be less likely to let clutter build up again.
Before: Great Stuff Goes UnusedThe homeowners have various collections of memorabilia and books, but with no room to display them, they are all packed away in boxes. They also have a regulation dartboard that they would like to be able to use.
After: Winning HandThe walls have been painted a meditative blue, then Kim painted a poker-themed mural to help define the card area. Built-in storage compartments underneath the couch cushions are the perfect place to keep cards and board games. Finally, the dartboard is hung up, along with some pictures and jam-band memorabilia.
