Paying Two Mortgages

Bachelor Marco Romero's three-bedroom Washington, D.C., townhouse has been sitting on the market for months. He is desperate to sell it so he can stay in his new home closer to school, where he's pursuing a graduate degree. Having to pay two mortgages and tuition is too much to bear, so he turns to the Designed to Sell team to help raise the roof on this row house so it finally sells.

Real estate expert Shirley Mattam-Male begins the assessment process, starting with the exterior. She is horrified by the unkempt front yard and dilapidated porch. Inside, she finds the place vacant—Marco has already moved out to avoid the double-mortgage dilemma. Empty houses are a big turnoff to potential homebuyers, she says. But the claustrophobic kitchen with the oversize refrigerator gets her vote for the worst room in the house.

Designer Taniya Nayak puts in her two cents next. She agrees with Shirley Mattam-Male and spells out a design plan to make this house sell already.

Step 1: Make the landscaping look sharp and rich, and liven up the porch. First impressions are key for a house that's on the market.

Step 2: Fill up the living area with some furniture and accent pieces to give potential buyers an idea of how great it can look.

Step 3: Give the claustrophobic kitchen a total overhaul. Create a nice flow between it and the adjacent dining room.
