Blah to BohemianBefore: Boring, Bland and Blah
Homeowner Kathryn Gaskell has lived in the same house her whole life. She has recently become divorced, so she is ready to give her master bedroom a new look. The room is a hodgepodge of style—the furniture is blah, there is no headboard, no architectural interest, and the wall of closets is just stark white. Kathryn would like a feminine, sophisticated room where she can relax and be herself.
The makeover starts with painting the entire room two shades of pink. The walls are painted dark-rose pink and the closet doors are painted a lighter, pale shade of pink.
Paint – $72
dark-pink paint: Ralph Lauren's Modern Rose, The Home Depot
light-pink paint: Ralph Lauren's Honey Suckle Hedge, The Home Depot
Headboard – $50The wood is given a time-worn look by sanding the edges and then rubbing dark stencil paint into the surface. The centerpiece on the headboard is made from treasures found at an estate sale. The picture frame is fastened to the center of an old Italian tray, then mosaic marbles are glued around the perimeter to add a little color and sparkle.
paint: Hirshfield's Bull Finch Blue
marble accents: Panacea – 9343270019
Closet Doors – $29The panels are given an antique look with a light coat stain on top and gold paint applied to the edges.
Curtains – $23Simple, inexpensive café rods were used to hang the curtains.
Bedding – $149A lavender chenille bedspread covers the bed, while a wrinkled bed skirt adds a shabby-chic touch. Vibrant throw pillows top it all off with some pattern and color.
bedspread:lavender coverlet – Que Sera
white bed skirt: Target – Shabby Chic White, queen size, 060240075
pillowcases: T.J. Maxx – Tommy Hilfiger
decorative pillow: T.J. Maxx – Waterford
Table and Lamp – $38A store-bought circular mirror makes a great tabletop, and a contemporary lamp completes the look.
lamp: Target – Issac Mizrahi, 065093494
mirror: Ikea – Kolja, 34890100
Armoire – $31The armoire is cut in half, and the top half is fastened to the top of an old dresser. Accent pieces found at a salvage yard add architectural interest and some whimsical detail. The entire piece is painted white and then given an aged look by lathering on dark-wood stain then rubbing it off. For a little extra detail, tiny pictures taken off a charm bracelet are glued onto the drawer knobs.
Chair – $15Table runner: T.J. Maxx – Table Linens, 640321
Shelves and Accessories – $83The trim is painted gold and the back wall is covered with flocked wallpaper. The shelves were painted the same light pink as the closet doors then filled with treasures found at an estate sale.
