Sanded Black and White Sibling Page

Learn how to add a distressed look to your scrapbook pages.

Designer Jill Miller creates a sibling page with a unique "distressed" look. To achieve this look, simply make a black and white copy of your favorite "sibling" photo— then "sand" the copy's surface.

Materials and Tools:

12" x 12" embossed printed specialty paper and blue vellum
8-1/2" x 11" sheet of embossed vellum letters
teddy bear, heart, and photo corner stickers
white "Brilliance" ink (optional)
dual tip white paint pen
cotton muslin
fine-grade sandpaper
double-stick tape
black and white photo print on mat paper

Steps:

  1. Sand black and white photocopy with fine sandpaper in horizontal and vertical strokes to mimic linen texture. Only sand lightly in the center of the portrait so as not to detract the subjects and sand a bit more on the outer edges of the print. Be sure to protect your work surfaces while sanding photo.

  • Sand edges of blue vellum in similar fashion, then brush sanded edges with white ink (optional).

  • Snip and rip cotton muslin for frayed fabric photo, journaling and title mats. Layer vellum and photo over muslin and adhere all fabric pieces to background paper.

  • For title, cut letters from an embossed vellum alphabet sheet (use a craft knife to get into all the tight spaces). Adhere letters onto muslin with various teddy bear and heart stickers. Add photo corner stickers to photo. Add journaling with white paint pen.
