Before: Too OrdinaryValerie and Matt have a full house with their two children, Beatrix and Faith Lillian, four cats and a dog. The interior decor reflects the family's charming style but the backyard seems to lack the same cheerful attitude. The couple dreams of an enchanted fairy garden that dazzles and delights family and friends.
Valerie and Matt Greenberg are both writers who have a passion for using their imaginations at work and at home. The inside of their home has a whimsical flair but the backyard is just plain boring.
After: Charmed CottageMatt finally has the ultimate built-in barbeque station complete with bar and seating area. Colorful plantings add texture and interest to help soften the hardscape. Their daughters have their very own fairy tale cottage with a working water wheel that spills into a small, refreshing wading pool. An old-fashioned thatched roof, quaint eaves and a curved door with a driftwood handle complete the storybook playhouse.
Before: Overpowering Play SetThey need more seating for parties and the outdoor cooking space is an eyesore. A spa is right off the patio, and while they love using it, they want a more attractive centerpiece for their yard.
After: Lush Spa GetawayAn eight-foot-high arbor runs along the patio and is draped with pink jasmine, while a stone wall gently sweeps around to the small bluestone patio off the back of the house. The spa is moved to the other side of the yard and surrounded by iceberg roses, euphorbia and a tall tupidanthus for privacy. A curved stairway leads up to the grass area, while new stairs off the French doors create a second entrance off the family room. In a space where enchantment is now an every day event, there's always something to explore. Beyond the tranquil wading pool, a luxurious garden provides privacy from the entertaining area and the perfect place for reading or writing.
