The DilemmaJenny and Michael DiPaulo are busy parents with two small boys and no time to redecorate their bedroom. From Michael's college furniture to the veined-glass closet doors, this couple needs an updated space where they can relax.
Jenny and Michael's bedroom is purely functional with no color scheme or style. The furniture is left over from Michael's bachelor days. The mirrored closet doors are dated, and a new bedding set is needed. The space gets flooded with natural light, so they need draperies to shield them from the daylight as well as streetlights at night.
The SolutionThe bed will be placed on an angle to open up the floor plan. New bedding and draperies will establish a relaxing color scheme. Round night tables will flank the bed and a light-up headboard will provide ambient lighting with a modern touch. The dated mirrors will get a new look with a frosting treatment. Here's how the space comes together.
Soft GreenThe organic pattern he's chosen in blues and greens accents the medium-blue draperies.
Light-Up HeadboardHe creates a simple rectangular box and inserts panels with cutouts of a twig-and-leaf design that are backlit from within the headboard.
Customized MirrorShe cuts a piece of self-adhesive paper to fit the surface of the mirror. After adhering the paper, she creates a cutaway design to match the headboard and sprays the exposed parts.
Closet Door TreatmentHe also sprays a pair of simple glass table lamps to go on the nightstands. The frosted elements match Jenny and Michael's existing dressers nicely.
Art GalleryCharles creates a frame for the perimeter of each door and inserts an acrylic panel. He creates a mat by spray painting the back of the acrylic with white paint made especially for plastic, leaving the areas unpainted where pictures will go. The photos are placed in the clear spots and secured with acid-free photo tape (typically available in craft stores).
Night Tables and LightingShe constructs the center of the tables with wooden support posts and then covers them with bamboo. The tables are topped with the new lamps.
