Before: All the Wrong ColorsKaren lives in a one-room loft divided by color, but the choices are opposite of what makes her comfortable. Her lifestyle has taken her on adventures around the world and she'd like her home to have an international, exotic flavor. She wants to find an exotic color that will set off the collection of artifacts she's brought home from her travels, but she's afraid she'll go over the top, overwhelming the space and everything in it. The hardwood floors and sandy colored sofas serve as a starting point for choosing new colors.

After: Earthy and ExoticAfter putting up with so many bright colors, Karen plays it safe and chooses a warm tan with a grayish tone for the walls. For the drapes, she picks the color of cumin, another earthy brown shade. The modern mirrored closet door is replaced with a custom-made, warm oak door. Chili pepper red textured wallpaper covers a central accent wall and red accents pepper the room.
Did You Know? Tone is the amount of gray added to a color. In many Eastern cultures, red is the luckiest color.
