Patchy LawnVeronica and Joe Martino have found the perfect place to escape the rat race of the big city—a little slice of heaven called Nyack, N.Y. Unfortunately, their backyard is far from spectacular. The Martinos would like to turn their rundown and bare backyard into a romantic retreat with an old world charm.
The Marinos' love their charming 19th century home in Nyack, New York just two short blocks from the water. They enjoy spending time outdoors, but that's where their problems begin. The backyard is a dark rectangle full of hard edge structures and half-dead plants, plus their do-it-yourself projects have only made minor improvements. They tried adding some interest by creating a planting bed along the side, but it was a bust.
Colorful LandscapeAfter looking over the three design plans, the couple decides on Jon Feldman's design which rounds out the yard with beds of flowering trees, bright perennials and even a secret garden. A new lawn is laid, leaving a courtyard of green that connects the patio and the three main garden beds. Lights positioned throughout the property allow the Martinos to enjoy their landscape day and night. Even the flower beds against the house are bursting with colorful lantana, hydrangeas and geraniums. They decided to keep the grass driveway that leads to the garage, but Feldman managed to turn it into a plus with beds of shrubs, trees and flowers.
Tumbling StoneThe rock wall at the back of the property needs to be repaired, and the homeowners also want to get rid of the lumber pile and the bare spot in the grass. In addition to rethinking the awkward driveway, the kayak needs a home of its own. Veronica thinks the patio makes a great dining area, but would like some new furniture.
Intimate Gathering PlaceIn the back, Felman creates a charming, special space where the couple can relax. To finish off the space, the crew restores the stone wall and fireboxes and moves the couple's existing fountain to the back corner. Gaura, hosta and sage spill over stacked bluestone walls, forming a romantic secret garden that's perfect for intimate dinners, daydreaming or even entertaining large groups. Beauty and function meet in the graceful raised garden beds where hidden drains divert run-off from the neighboring yards and layers of plants fill the space everywhere you look.
