Vickie and Ben Gambino have always enjoyed the view of the lake from their suburban Chicago home, and so has everyone else. The space wasn't large enough to accommodate guests, so the homeowners decided to undertake a major kitchen renovation.
They called on designer Sandi Paul to bring their room to life. Their first step was to put on an addition. The ended up adding nearly eight feet to the old layout.
One feature Ben is really excited about is the kitchen's banquette seating. He explains, "my favorite spot in the kitchen is right here. Everybody likes to congregate in the kitchen, so this is a great place to have the banquette right in front of the television." He equates it with going to a restaurant, "a lot of times it's my preference is to sit in a booth, as opposed to sitting at a table." On the backside of the banquette is an artistic feature that goes with the home's water theme. The design etched into the frosted-glass panels provides a very tranquil water-like feel.
Inspired by a design they had seen in Las Vegas, the homeowners came up with a plan to have a clear view of their indoor swimming pool. To that end, a glass floor is placed next to the banquette in the kitchen and is designed to overlook the pool below. The flooring is a commercial-grade material that is very safe and extremely strong.
Vickie chose concrete for the island top and went with granite for the backsplash, noting that the rich style of the granite matched her cat's fur.
The homeowners' motto is "the more the merrier," so in keeping with that adage, they decide to get at least two of everything. The kitchen is equipped with two sinks, two dishwashers, a double oven and three refrigerators. Perfect for a big crowd!
One of the most convenient features in this kitchen is the expansive pantry cabinets. Before the renovation, the pantry area was out in the garage, so in the winter the homeowners had to thaw out their groceries by the heating vent.
