Before: Very BeigeOver the course of 40 years, Gary and Wendy Patriquin have been busy taking care of their seven children as well as fostering 57 kids. However, in all this time they haven't managed to give themselves what their home really needs — an adult space where they can dine and gather as a family.
They've never had a dining room where the immediate family could sit together to eat a meal, so hosts Andrika Lawren and Emmanuel Belliveau are ready to transform the space with a modern design.
After: Rich ColorThey add architectural detail and elegance by installing a decorative plate rail and attractive moldings on the wall. The plate rail and below are painted a rich wine color and warm taupe is used above and on the ceiling. Elegant French doors separate the room and enhance its intimacy. To treasure the memory of all the children that have passed through the Patriquin home, a special photographic display hangs prominently in the room.
Before: Bland DesignThe shabby drapes and worn carpeting need to be replaced, and although there are a few antique pieces, some of the furniture is just plain old. Since the children have grown, they no longer have to worry about having kid-friendly furnishings and fabrics. Scot and Heidi want to create a modern, sophisticated space where their parents can feel like grownups.
After: Dramatic StyleThe musty old curtains and worn-out carpet are replaced with gold-tinted roller shades and a stylish new wool rug. The main feature of the room is a gorgeous dining table to accommodate large family gatherings. As a modern touch, a contemporary sofa is used on one side of the table to help create an intimate feel. The antique chairs are reupholstered with soft cream-colored fabric, bringing both an eclectic feel and continuity to this suite.

Flock of BirdsTo simulate this look, cut a stencil to the desired shape and apply ceiling plaster into the negative space using a trowel. Let the plaster set for two minutes, and then paint the raised shape with complementary colors.
Initial PlacematThey used a sewing machine with embroidery capabilities and a font program to create the unique initials in the corner of the mats. To complete the look, they mixed and matched Wendy's beautiful china collection.
