The DilemmaSusie Hillard's apartment is a mix of thrift-store gems made over to reflect her funky and glamorous style, but when it comes to her bedroom, she needs inspiration. Susie needs nightstands as well as functional and stylish lighting. She has an extensive shoe and purse collection that she has tucked away in closets and corners that she'd like to enjoy, even when she isn't wearing them. She currently puts on her makeup while sitting on the floor in front of a crooked mirror.
Since Susie is a renter, she can't paint the walls, but what the space needs most is a shot of color. The gray carpet is a wonderful neutral, but a funky rug is also in order.
The SolutionThe bed will gain impact with a colorful fabric backdrop, while new hanging lamps will illuminate each side of the bed. New nightstands will balance the bed area, providing storage as well as a spot for Susie to put her scripts when she turns in for the night.
A colorful fabric tackboard will provide a place for posting pictures and mementos. A vanity and mirror will add a touch of Hollywood glamour, while display shelving for shoes and purses will evoke the feel of a glamorous boutique.
Striped PillowsRich teal and aqua punctuated with purples and bold pinkish-red accents, along with rich bedding will create a bold yet feminine attitude in the bedroom.
Painted NightstandsDesign coordinator Dave Sheinkopf gives thrift-store nightstands a fresh look with a coat of vibrant teal paint.
Light FixturesAbove the nightstands on each side of the bed are glittery beaded hanging light fixtures.
Framed ArtInterior designer Kristan Cunningham photographs Susie's shoes and bags with a digital camera. She makes prints of the images, frames them and hangs them in groupings of four on either side of the bed to serve as wall art with a truly personal touch.
Shelving UnitsDesign coordinator Spencer Anderson uses medium density fiberboard (MDF) to build display shelving for Susie's purses and shoes. He gives the shelves a coat of teal paint and installs low-profile lighting to highlight the collections. Lastly, the faces of the units are framed using gold spray-painted molding.
Vintage VanityTinted furniture polish brings out the luster of the wood and camouflages any blemishes, and a thrift-store chair gets a bright new cushion to complete the look.
Purple BenchA new bench for the foot of the bed is covered in rich graphic purple fabric. The pink-and-white rug underneath is vibrant, practical, and machine washable for style and convenience.
