Eclectic, Contemporary Living Room with Eastern-Style Design

The Double Take team recreates a $138,000 eclectic living room for less than $2,200.

The contemporary sideboard in the designer room is solid oak with custom pyramid-shaped, bronze pulls on the drawers. The piece is valued at over $20,000. An ugly yellow dresser bought at a thrift store is transformed into a duplicate for $133. Using medium-density fiber board (MDF), Jamie cuts 3/4-inch-thick slats at 45-degree angles to get the triangular pieces needed to replicate the art-deco design. The slats are glued and nailed onto the front of the dresser. A coat of primer and then a coat of red ochre latex paint are used to create the new finish. Seven new knobs on the drawer fronts complete the job.
