Handmade Collage Card

Becky Tesch creates a handmade fabric collage greeting card.

Materials and Tools:

8-1/2" x 11" letter sized paper
collage items: translucent papers, wrapping papers, photographs, magazine pages, stickers, scraps of interesting fabrics, fake flowers, pressed real flowers, sequins, buttons
sewing machine or needle and thread
glue stick
envelope (A-2 size or 4.375" x 5.75")

Steps:

1. Fold an 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper in half matching the 8-1/2" sides.

2. Fold it in half again to make a 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" card that opens on the right (figure A).

3. Cut a variety of papers into rectangular pieces, graduating the sizes. Glue them to the front of the card (figure B).

4. Cut collage pieces into shapes that you like and arrange them on the card, gluing them in place (figure C).

5. Open the card and stitch a random pattern over the collage on the front of the card using a sewing machine. This adds textural interest and creates some dimensionality to the card. The sewing does not need to be complicated (figure D). Generally, these cards aren't going to go through a lot of rough treatment, so you really don't need to tie knots or secure the ends of the thread very securely. The sewn pieces should stay put just by running a few stitches through them.

6. Write your message on the inside and place it in its envelope.
