Before: A Bland Living RoomWith a plain wall and just a few pieces of furniture, this den is in need of a new look.
After: Cozy Cabin-in-the-City Living RoomCreative touches are added throughout the space to create a cozy look on a small budget.
Wall Paint – $40The inspiration for the wall treatment comes from the soft muted colors found in a classic camp blanket. First, a mixture of paint and glaze goes over the existing wall color to tone it down and give it an antique effect. Then, the stripes are painted onto the lower half of the walls using a dry-brush technique for a very soft look.
- paint: Behr – Sweet Maple (yellow) 320D-5, Custom Red Oops Paint, Hampton Green 450F-7, Warm Spring (blue) 560B-6, Faux glaze No. 7
Branch Frame – $0To highlight the homeowner's wedding photo, an additional frame is made from birch branches and fastened to the wall.
Sconces – $20Old bait buckets are transformed into wall sconces to go on each side of the picture window.
Porch – $60To create the North Woods porch setting, an old screen door is fastened to the wall, and a window is hung on each side. Antique shutters are made into an awning for above the door. Three pieces of lumber are fastened onto the back of the shutters and attached to support brackets to hold up the awning.
Game Table – $21The rustic game table is made by painting stripes and a checkerboard onto the tabletop. The checker pieces are crafted from branch medallions and painted either red or black.
Armchair Covers – $18Leather armchair covers are added to the homeowner's cloth chair to help it blend into the cabin theme.
Reading Corner – $21
A reading corner (not pictured) is created with the homeowner's leather club chair and a new side table. The side table is crafted from an old trunk and some logs. To give the trunk some height, four logs are screwed into the bottom of the trunk to serve as table legs.
Canoe Shelf – $137A chest of drawers was placed in the alcove, and a shelf was placed on top. The shelf is made from an old canoe. The ends of a canoe were cut off, and the middle section is converted into shelving.
Window – $36A valance is made from one long tree branch. Pieces of leather are bunched and tied to the branch with leather string.
