Steps:
Coil Rose and Leaf
1. To make a silk coil rose, fold the piece of satin silk ribbon in half, with wrong sides together. The top of the rose is the long fold you have just made. Fold down the right side of the ribbon, and then fold this across on itself. Roll this ribbon to the left so a cylinder is formed. This is the center of the coil rose (Figure B).

2. Sew running stitches along the entire length of the ribbon (Figure C) (along the raw edges), but do not secure the gathering yet.

3. Gather the ribbon to about an eight-inch length. With a needle and thread attached, roll the ribbon on itself around the center you formed. Sew each roll as you go so the rose center and the rolls don't pop out (Figure E). Secure with stitches.

4. Make two green silk leaves using 10 inches of green silk ribbon for each leaf. Fold the ribbon across on itself so a triangle is formed. Sew across the bottom of the "triangle" and gather tightly (Figure H). Sew or glue a leaf to each side of the rose, in the back.

5. Sew a pin back to a small piece of felt. Glue the pin and felt to the back of the rose so all the messy edges are covered (Figure J).

Variation Coil Rose with Petals
1. Fold the piece of satin silk ribbon in half, with wrong sides together. The top of the rose is the long fold you have just made. Fold down the right side of the ribbon, and then fold this across on itself. Roll this ribbon to the left so a cylinder is formed. This is the center of the coil rose.

2. Divide the length of ribbon into six to eight even segments, about four inches per segment. Sew a continuous running stitch pattern along the folded ribbon, but do not secure the gathering yet.

3. Gather the ribbon to about 10 inches in length. Petals will form as the ribbon is gathered.

4. With a needle and thread attached, roll the ribbon on itself around the center. Sew each petal segment to the rose center as you go layers don't pop out. Secure with stitches.

5. Make two silk leaves using 10 inches of green silk ribbon for each leaf. Fold the ribbon across on itself so a triangle is formed. Sew across the bottom of the "triangle" and gather tightly. Sew or glue a leaf to each side of the rose, in the back.

6. Sew a pin back to a small piece of felt. Glue the pin and felt to the back of the rose so all the messy edges are covered.
