Before: Old-Fashioned LivingAn outdated 1970s family room is transformed into a gorgeous sophisticated living space. This is the story of a lovely lady, Barb, who was busy raising her son, Steve, until she met Liam and his daughter, Shana, who were all alone. Now the O'Kanes are living all together, but this blended family's den looks like something out of the Brady Bunch!
Shana and Steve O'Kane want to transform their parents' tired, dated family room into a modern space that is still comfortable and functional for this blended family. While they may want to incorporate the stone wall into their design, it's time to remove the white stucco walls, dark wood paneling and old carpeting.
After: Sophisticated Family SpaceTo enhance the fireplace wall, the red stone is stained gray to give it a sense of elegance. The mantel extends across the entire wall and now incorporates a bar area for the family to enjoy. After removing the wood paneling, a new chair rail blends the sanded stucco with the smooth wall below. The industrial carpeting was replaced with new cork flooring, adding warmth to the entire room.
Before: Mismatched FurnitureThe huge cabinetry covers the entire wall, making the space seem smaller than it really is. To create smoother traffic flow, the furniture layout needs to be rearranged so there's space behind the sofa for people who are going to the outside patio and pool.
After: Modern, but ComfortableThe mismatched furniture has been replaced with a modern sectional sofa, while the new coffee table doubles as extra seating and complements the room's casual style. Simple shelving lines the wall and provides a new home for all the family's mementos.
Wood Panel Box FrameThe O'Kane family tree, framed by recycling the old wood paneling that reminds Liam of an Irish whiskey barrel, is now a prominent feature in the updated room. To create similar artwork, start with a purchased picture frame and build an outer frame to surround it. Attach pieces of paneling to the frames to cover the space between them. Stain and seal the wood or enhance it with fabric, paint or decorative paper. Add a favorite picture and hang!
