BeforeHost Joan Steffend and designer Richard Anderson give a living and dining room a contemporary masculine look for less than $500.
Wall Paint – $70Three shades of gray paint are blended together to create a serene palette, with the lightest shade on top and the deepest on the bottom. An accent wall in the dining area is painted a deep teal color for a bit of contrast.
- wall paint: Behr – Granite Boulder, Squirrel and Dusty Mountain
Dining Table and Chairs – $77The base for the new dining-room table is constructed from plastic laminated columns found at a garage sale. The four columns are fastened together with flanges and chrome plumbing pipe; a round piece of glass serves as the tabletop. The homeowner's dining chairs are re-covered in a green ultra-suede fabric to give them a more modern look.
Wall Panel – $62To add texture, and to help the acoustics in the space, a masculine-style wall panel is hung in the dining room. Square-padded panels are made from a variety of suit fabrics and big chrome upholstery buttons. A wooden grid is constructed on a wall and then the panels are hung inside the grid.
Window Treatments – $65Continuing the masculine theme, curtains are sewn from men's suit fabric. The curtains are pleated to look like trousers and are hung on a contemporary chrome rod.
- curtain rods: Kirsh, available at Home Depot
Lighting – $50
For a more clean-lined, modern look, the fixture above the dining table is replaced with a simple shade and a lamp kit.
Coffee Table – $65A contemporary coffee table is built for the centerpiece of the living room. Two wooden rounds are stained dark ebony. The table legs are made using wooden dowels wrapped in stainless-steel self-adhesive paper. Draw-pulls are fastened to the top and bottom of the legs to serve as finials. The legs are then bolted to the two rounds for a tabletop and lower shelf.
Gallery Lighting and Artwork – $63Industrial lights and custom artwork come together to create a focal point above the couch. Gallery lighting is constructed using plumbing pipe and mini clamp lights. Underneath the lights hang four artist canvases painted in hot hues and vibrant colors.
Accessories – $50
Throw pillows are added to serve two purposes to update the look of the homeowner's couch and to bring the teal color from the dining area into the living room.
