A Blank SpaceMelanie Patterson loves her '60s-style house and has spent the last two years renovating it. This is the first year she will be away from her family for the holidays, so she's throwing a party of her own. She wants it to be a casual cocktail party with a '60s theme, to match her house. The Design on a Dime team is on board to help her deck the halls for less than $1,000.
Melanie wants to entertain her friends this holiday season, and she wants to do it up right. So far her only Christmas decoration is a miniature pink-tinsel tree. She wants a space where her she and her friends can toast the season in '60s style, to match her house.
Ready for a PartyThe Solution
Interior designer Kristan Cunningham designs a space with bold holiday color that will coordinate with Melanie's furnishings. Crisp, clean decorations and a unique twist on the traditional Christmas tree will create a modern-meets-retro look. Wall-mounted light boxes will showcase the fireplace and provide ambient lighting, while a holiday-themed vinyl rug will define the seating area. Bold splashes of color and modern decorations will provide the nontraditional holiday theme Melanie desires. Here's how the team gets it done.
Modern WreathDesign coordinator Dave Sheinkopf creates a modern wreath by wrapping white lights on a metal wreath frame, attaching them with plastic ties.
Card DisplayDave then designs a holiday card display board made by wrapping standard bulletin boards of varying sizes in holiday-themed fabrics. He wraps the boards like presents and staples the fabric to the back.
Spencer builds a holiday mobile using precut snowflake shapes, foam balls and monofilament. He also builds light-filled acrylic boxes to go around the support beams in the room for a creative and festive take on ambient lighting.
Creative Base for the TreeKristan gets to work constructing the base for the tree. Each half of the octagon-shaped box is built separately using MDF and wood glue. A half-circle is cut out of the top center of each half to accommodate the trunk of the Christmas tree when pushed together. She attaches mirrors to the sides for holiday sparkle.
Decorate with PresentsShe then creates oversize "presents" for the wall by wrapping large panels of particle board in holiday paper and finishing them with festive ribbon. The pieces are mounted with blocks of wood to leave room for lots of twinkling lights.
The team gives the room strategically-placed splashes of Tomato Red and Grass Cloth paint colors that will not only be festive for Christmas, but will also be chic the rest of the year, too.
Funky Christmas TreeSpencer gets to work creating his modern take on the Christmas tree. The frame is created by welding several small-diameter metal pipes to a longer length of pipe, which serves as the trunk of the tree. He then paints the whole thing white. The frame is wrapped in white lights and white beach balls, which have a hollow-center core. The balls are inflated and placed individually on each "branch."
Festive FireplaceDave builds festive light boxes for each side of the fireplace. He starts by using mahogany-stained high-quality plywood and Plexiglas. He mounts a block of wood on the wall where he wants each lightbox to go and attaches a series of screws. The blocks will hold the lightboxes themselves, and the screws are used to secure the lights within for festive ambient lighting.
Red RugKristan creates an ornament-shaped rug for the seating area by cutting the shape out of red vinyl floor covering. Modern holiday accessories complete the package.
