Bland Office Makeover

Host Joan Steffend and designer Krista Crawford bring some organization and life into a bland office space for under $500.

Wall Paint–$38
To begin the makeover the walls are painted warm brown.

  • wall paint: Behr–Brown Rabbit

Antique Desk
The homeowner's large antique desk is moved in front of the window to create a focal point in the room.

Console Table–$18
An old chifforobe/lingerie case is converted into a console table. Dividers are added inside the drawers to help the homeowners get organized. Boxes are attached to each side of the table to store magazines. The entire piece is given a fresh coat of black paint. Brass nameplates are then attached to the front of the drawers in order to label the contents within.

  • black paint: Behr - Beluga 770F-7

Two garage-sale chairs are reupholstered with rich herringbone fabric and trim. The chairs are placed in front of the desk to help anchor the desk in the room.

Roman Shade–$72
A tapestry-style Roman shade is hung over the window and bullion trim is added to the bottom for an extra touch of elegance. The shade's fabric sets off the warmth of the wall color with rich tones of reds, greens, browns and golds.

  • bullion fringe: Calico Corners - style: red/gold

Framed Chalk and Message Boards–$40
Two garage-sale frames are refurbished with water-based putty used to fill in the missing pieces of gesso and cracked edges. The frames are then painted black and bronze with touches of gold. A chalkboard is inserted in one frame and a cork board in the other.

  • bulletin board 22.5x35: GBC – style: 8402398

Three-panel screen

Folding Screen/Message Board–$61
A folding screen is made from three old long, narrow window frames. The frames are cleaned and painted black. The message board panels are made by crisscrossing black grosgrain ribbon over upholstered panels and fastening in the back with staples, and in the front center with a small antique nail head. The panels are then secured inside each pane on the window frame. The three frames are then hinged together.
