World Retreat Bedroom

A plain master bedroom gets a fresh look with this world-traveler themed makeover.

This master bedroom needs a shot of color and a cohesive theme to tie all of the eclectic pieces together.

A dose of warm color, beautiful fabrics and exotic accessories transform the bland master bedroom. Lee Snijders, Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge come up with a plan to unify the homeowner's exotic pieces for a dramatic world-traveler theme. The makeover begins with a coat of butterscotch-colored paint on the white walls.

Paint - $79: wall paint - Benjamin Moore - Mystic Gold HC-37

Headboard - $170
Snijders uses a room screen to create an interesting headboard. He removes the hinges and attaches the panels closer together on the wall inside a 1x4 frame, which creates a 3-D effect. (headboard: Cost Plus World Market - Chemaia, 000000363295)

Bedding - $216
Baltzer brings an array of pattern and texture to the bed with a variety of fabrics, including tapestries, silks, faux fur, beaded and corded trim and accent buttons. (fabric: Tex Carmel)

End Tables - $200
Burbridge finds a pair of rattan and iron bedside tables at a thrift store that also offer storage.

Lamps - $50
Retro-inspired lamps look right at home in the exotic-themed room.

Beaded Valance - $96
For an added decorative touch on the curtains, Burbridge creates custom polymer clay beads using a napkin ring to create a textured impression. The doorway into the bathroom is enhanced with a valance made out of a room screen panel and beaded curtains. (beaded curtains: Cost Plus World Market - Dark bamboo bead 000000357295)

Valance Update - $8
Baltzer updates the white valance with dark brown paint and an upholstered inset made out of foam board. She wraps fabric around the board (using duct tape to secure it on the back) and attaches it to the valance with hook-and-loop tape.

Chairs - $80
Two side chairs provide for a cozy corner seating area.

Accessories - $99

Project Total - $998
