Chic and Trendy Living Room

Newlyweds Jeff Harper and Erin Schaeberle's new living/dining room lacks any real style. They are hoping for a look that is both chic and trendy. Student designer Paul Phaknikone, confident in his skills, tackles this blank slate head on.

  • The newlywed owners of this home haven't even moved in yet. They are starting from scratch and want to set a chic tone for their first place by tackling the living room design.
  • Repetition of squares, soothing sage walls, a sleek entertainment center and a swanky new couch and chair greet the couple and guests upon entering this home.
  • An open floor plan leaves the living room open to the kitchen, but the couple would like to be able to separate the two areas when desired.
  • Fears of the drapes feeling like the '70s or a tent were quickly dispelled when the homeowners saw the curtains that afford them partial or complete separation from the kitchen.
  • The fireplace in this brand new home is a blank canvas so whatever is done to it will have a major impact on the entire place.
  • Removing the existing traditional mantel enabled rustic floor-to-ceiling slate tiles to be installed so this focal point is now in keeping with the trendy and chic design.
