Updated '80s Living Room

A student designer is challenged with bringing modern style to a living room that screams early '80s.

  • Floor-to-ceiling mirrors surrounding the hunter green fireplace are "awful" according to the homeowners, but they're stuck for ideas. They also don't like the wet bar and aren't using it much since they say it's ugly.
  • Removing the mirrors, adding a hearth box and new mantel plus opening up the bar to the TV area makes the homeowners feel like they're not even in their house! A custom sofa and ottoman and slipcovered chairs capture the simple and contemporary feeling the couple was after.
  • White walls, overstuffed leather furniture and light beige carpeting don't combine for the contemporary style the homeowners want. Although the carpet is fairly new, it has to go because it shows dog hair and any debris the two pets bring in the room.
  • Laminate flooring, a deep red wall with treasured art and new furniture in a slightly different arrangement makes the large room more inviting and also more spacious all at the same time. There's even a reversible dog bed for the pampered pooches.
  • This view highlights the stark white walls and floor and the mirrored fireplace that's so '80s.
  • The chosen paint colors add inexpensive ambiance and the simplified fireplace and custom furniture is more welcoming than before.
