Before and After: Backyard Hideaway Retreat

The Landscape Smart team incorporates an underwater theme and a kid-friendly design to create a family retreat.

Homeowners Jennifer Gee and Mike Matsumoto want to turn their wide, undefined backyard into a beautiful area that complements the view. In addition, they need a well-designed space where they can relax and watch their son at play.

Before: The homeowners want a child-friendly backyard, and they'd like to preserve the natural beauty of the area and achieve some privacy from neighbors.

Before

Before: Although the view is beautiful, the yard is brown, barren and neglected.

After

After: It's a family-friendly retreat. Deck rails were removed and the wood converted to a bench and a planter.

Pots

There's no need for railing with these colorful pots in place.

After

After: Without the deck rail, the space opens up to the view.

Door

A colorful door forms the backdrop for a play area and helps provide privacy.
