Polymer Clay Turtle Necklace, Heart Bracelet

Alexis Greer shows how to make a turtle pendant and a heart charm bracelet from polymer clay. Follow these step-by-step instructions to make your own.

Projects by Alexis Greer from Arlington, Va.

Alexis has taken over the coffee table in her apartment, creating adorable animal pendants and charm bracelets. Her habit started when she was only 11, making accessories for her dollhouse out of polymer clay. It wasn't long before it occurred to her that this same medium would be perfect for making jewelry. In these projects, Alexis makes a turtle pendant from a jelly roll cane of polymer clay, with smaller beads to adorn the necklace. She will also use the jelly roll cane process to create small, cleverly sculpted hearts to go on a charm bracelet.

Materials and Tools:

polymer clay
clay tools
oven
black permanent marker
clear glaze
headpin
knitting needle
beading wire and clasp
crimping tool

Steps:

1. Roll out ball of clay with bead roller tool to get uniform ball. Push the ball down into a half ball to get the turtle's shell shape.

2. Make jelly roll cane: Layer silver/white/transparent clay into a roll, slice into pieces and cover shell with it.

3. Make head and legs: Roll out log of clay; cut off head and leg piece; and attach all to shell. Cut little smiley mouth into head

4. To make the tail, roll out a thin log of green clay and attach to back of shell, making sure it doesn't stick out too much or it will break off.

5. Poke hole through body of turtle from top to bottom with needle tool.

6. To make the smaller beads with turtle design in them: First make a jelly roll cane with seven little circles of clay. Fill in jelly roll cane with another color. Reduce cane down to desired size by pinching all around.

7. Make beads with small balls of clay. Slice jelly roll cane and cover beads with slices.

8. With knitting needle, form holes in beads.

9. Put beads and turtle in oven and bake. Let cool.

10. Draw eyes with black permanent marker. Paint top and bottom with clear glaze and allow to dry.

11. Attach headpin to turtle. Use beading wire for necklace, attach clasp using crimp bead. Thread the beads and pendant onto the wire.
