Living Room Gets Arts and Crafts Design Style

Couple's historic Chicago bungalow has great character but needs some inspiration.

Rita and Kevin Rogers turn to student designer Patrick Thompson for help with adding life to their living room. Thompson plans to add vanilla and sage walls, wainscoting, a ledge around the room, contemporary carpet tiles, an updated coffee table and a modern mural plus fix the existing stained glass window. All in two days and with $2,000!

Before the makeover, Rita and Kevin are afraid to do anything in their somewhat boring living room. One likes modern, the other traditional.

The view to the front door shows that the room has great potential, but just needs more interest on the walls and slight adjustments to the furniture arrangements to bring it to life.

When Patrick is done, carpet tiles combined into a large area rug pull all the colors of the room together and ground the main seating arrangement. A separate seating area is created with the existing chair and ottoman. Blueprints of the house, displayed in black frames, combine the Rogers' love of the historic with their contemporary sensibilities.
