Contemporary-Meets-Sophistication Living Room

Merging traditional and modern creates sophisticated.

Nate Sauer and Lesley Schmid recently moved into their home and the living room is a random combination of his traditional choices and her modern. Design student Nancy Vazquez-Luna plans to merge their two worlds by keeping the lines to a minimum, adding color in unexpected places plus including a new sleek daybed, an updated mantel and a custom-built credenza.

Yellow walls make the big space warm and an initially controversial daybed replaces the oversized and outdated couches. A new mantel is sturdier than the old one and more in keeping with the clients' taste.

Choosing a color for this plain living/dining room is the first hurdle the owners can't seem to conquer and moving forward with anything else for the space has proven impossible.

The existing window seat becomes another focal point through the use of bold blue paint, a cushion and a draped panel. Round lines are a recurring theme in this design and are reflected in the mirror, lampshades and fabric choices.
