Whimsical Ribbon and Yarn Window Topper

Tips for desiging a creative valance.

A punch of color is added above this window shade using ribbons and yarns for a simple yet fun springtime valance.

Materials and Tools:

fabric
lining
ribbons (wide and thin)
yarn

Steps:

1. Measure the width of the window and cut a piece of fabric and lining the same size being sure to allow for seam allowances (the featured topper is 18 inches high).

2. To add the ribbons and decorative stitches, start by putting wide, flat ribbons in place on the fabric piece. Space them along the full length of the panel and pin each in place. Sew them on with a straight stitch along both sides, and then sew them on randomly with decorative stitches.

3. Twist the yarns and thin ribbons to give them and the topper as much personality as possible. Pin each in place, and then attach them with zigzag or straight stitches that don't have to cover the entire strand (as long as the yarn is caught in several places along the stitch line, it will stay in place and the overstitching just becomes another part of the design). Continue in this fashion adding yarns or just lines of fun stitching until satisfied.

4. Place the fabric panel on top of the matching lining piece with right sides facing and pin together. Sew around the valance, leaving an area open for turning. Hand-stitch the opening closed, and then iron the panel flat.
