The Great Room Dilemma

The makeover of a two-story extra-large great room, which is at the center of an open floor plan, means the adjoining rooms need a makeover as well to keep the style flowing.

Before

Hosts Matt Fox and Shari Hiller take on a two-story challenge with this extra large great room. They also discover that due to the openness of the home, the adjoining rooms need a makeover as well to keep the style flowing throughout the first floor of this home. Fox and Hiller put all their skills to use in this multi-room makeover.

This two-story great room is open to the stairway, dining room and kitchen in this home so decorating it has become quite a challenge. With little color and such a grand scale, it's not as welcoming as it could be.

After

An accent wall of color, new window coverings and fresh accessories tie the kitchen and great room together through the use of repetition.

Before

These massive windows are beautiful and the fireplace is a great focal point, but the all-white walls aren't making this the cozy country space the homeowners want.

After

This focal wall looks great painted in a brown tone that adds a lot of warmth and makes the white trim stand out more. Woven wood shades in a similar tone add some light control and privacy to the lower part of the windows and the plate.
