A Basement Family Room

See how hosts Matt Fox and Shari Hiller create a welcoming retreat out of a basement living room.

This newly constructed basement family room has three major focal points — the massive stone fireplace, a big-screen TV and a beautiful outdoor view.

The couches have been with the homeowner since his bachelor days so he and his wife won't be sad to see them replaced with something new.

New furniture, accessories and a couple of shop projects help to turn this room into a masculine paradise that the whole family can actually enjoy. A large sectional with decorative pillows and throws maximizes each focal point, while two small armless chairs encourage conversations when the TV is off.

The sectional offers more seating than before and is surrounded by useful tables that hold additional lighting, drinks and snacks.
